Description
The Black Tern ( chlidonias niger) is a small, graceful tern, about 20 – 26 cm. (8-10 in) long with a dark chest and head and gray wings. It breeds in colonies where it builds floating nests among cattails in shallow freshwater marshes. They are often seen hovering just above the water where they pick insects and small fish off the surface. In Ontario, the Black Tern is listed as a species of “special Concern meaning that it is not endangered or threatened, but may become endangered or threatened because of the draining of wetlands, water pollution and disturbance from humans via boat traffic.
Photographed along the Marsh Boardwalk in Ontario's Point Pelee National Park.
