Description
The Common Goldeneye is a diving duck that forages underwater on aquatic vertebrates and small fish. It is aptly named for its distinctive golden colored eye. Female Common Goldeneyes are renowned for using other Goldeneye nests as well as nests of other ducks to lay their eggs. This behaviour is common to other species of ducks like Wood Ducks and Common Mergansers as well. In some cases a female Goldeneye will abandon her chicks soon after hatching forcing the young to join other female broods in a mixed brood known as a "creche".
