Description
The dragonfly is sometimes called a “darner”, “devils arrow”, or” Devils darning needle”. The name dragonfly has its source in the myth that they evolved from dragons. They are widespread throughout the world and commonly located around freshwater habitats. These striking insects have two pairs of veined, transparent wings and long bodies and are extremely agile flyers making them one of the fastest insects moving up to 45 miles per hour with the ability to hover, fly backwards, fly straight up and manoeuver from side to side. Their large bulging eyes provide them with a field of vision of almost 360 degrees. Because of their build and excellent field of vision, dragonflies are extremely effective aerial predators.
