Description
The Galapagos Fur Seal is found only in the Galapagos Archipelago. In the true sense, this species really isn't a fur seal, but a fur sea lion. True seals do not have external ears like sea lions. Galapagos "Fur Seals" or "Fur Sea Lions" can be distinguished from sea lions by their smaller size, much thicker fur, shorter broader head, pointed nose, prominent ears and bulging, glazed eyes. When seen on the black lava rocks of the Galapagos they resemble a character from a children's book.
