Description
With a wingspan of more than two metres and weighing as much as six kilograms, the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is one of North America’s largest birds of prey. Golden Eagles derive their name from the golden-brown feathers on their neck, back and wings. They are extremely fast flyers and can swoop down on their unsuspecting quarry at speeds of more than 200 km. an hour. Jackrabbits and other small animals make up most of their prey, but they are also capable of killing larger birds and mammals including cranes, deer and even domestic livestock. Admired around the world, the Golden Eagle is the national emblem of Mexico, Albania, Germany Austria and Kazakhstan.
