Description
The gray wolves of Yellowstone have become one on the national park's major tourist attractions since being re-introduced in 1995. Actually seeing a wolf in the wild is fairly rare, but with some research, a bit of luck, a good spotting scope and a willingness to get out by sunrise, Yellowstone is one of the best locations to visit and what a thrill when your luck and patience pays off! Douglas W. Smith and Gary Ferguson in their book "Decade of the Wolf: Returning the Wild to Yellowstone" write that "an unforgettable aspect of such encounters is the wolf's eyes, which can seem to look right through you. They are the eyes of something untamed, of a creature either unwilling or unable to divorce itself from the wild."
The wolf population in Yellowstone fluctuates from year to year influenced by such factors as severe winters, availability of food, disease (mange), encounters with other wolves and encounters with humans. In December of 2007, a total of 94 wolves was recorded living in the park. In December of 2012, only 34 were counted.
