Description
Great Blue Herons (Ardea Herodias) are large wading birds of the heron family standing 45 to 54 inches (115 - 138 cm.) They are the largest of the North American herons. They can be found on and near the shores of open water and wetlands of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. They are often found nesting in colonies where the males and females share in the incubation of eggs and feeding the young. Although they primarily eat fish, they are also known to consume mice and other small animals. Occasionally Great Blue Herons have been known to choke to death trying to consume a fish too big to swallow.
