The smallest of the three merganser species in North America, the Hooded Merganser ( lophodytes cucullatus) inhabits small ponds, streams and rivers where they dive for food which includes fish, crayfish and aquatic insects. They nest in tree cavities. The young leave the nest, never to return when only one day old.
