Description
Red-necked Grebes (podiceps grisegena) are fairly large grebes that are superb swimmers and excellent divers, disappearing underwater to catch small fish and crustaceans. Their aquatic environment includes shallow fresh water lakes, bays, marshes and other inland bodies of water. The monogamous pair builds their nest on floating vegetation where the female lays four to five eggs. When the chicks hatch, they climb onto a parent’s back where they spend the majority of their time until just over two weeks old. Both parents participate in caring for and feeding their young.
Photographed at Colonel Sam Smith Park in Toronto, Ontario.
