I photographed this black bear in Alberta's Waterton Lakes National Park. The bear was browsing on some wild rose bushes as it started to snow. On this particular shot, the auto focus on my camera locked onto the rose bushes rather than the bear, throwing my main subject out of focus and creating this unique abstract of a black bear in a snowstorm. On reviewing my images after the shoot, I almost trashed this image, but the longer I looked at it, the better I liked it. In fact it turned out to be my favorite image of this particular bear. It just goes to show us that we shouldn't be too hasty in discarding some of our images. Some of my favorite images are ones that I initially placed in my "second chance" file.
I'm a retired teacher living in Southern Ontario, Canada. I worked 35 years full time and 10 years part time as a classroom teacher and guidance counselor with the Peel District School Board. I also worked part time in the Faculties of Education of York University and the University of Toronto in their Additional Qualifications Programs. I purchased my first SLR camera back in the 60's and instantly fell in love with photography. My love of the outdoors led to my keen interest in hiking and nature/wildlife photography.
