Like cormorants, Anhingas are not able to waterproof their feathers and as a result their feathers can become waterlogged making the bird barely buoyant. Consequently, Anhingas usually swim low in the water with just the long slender neck and head showing, giving them the nickname of snake-bird. They are also referred to as Water-Turkeys because of their broad tail. Other names associated with the Anhinga are Darter and American Darter. They are excellent flyers, often found soaring effortlessly sometimes reaching altitudes of several thousand feet.

Awesome capture Gary! I have never heard of this bird. I just learned about the comorants, as I took a photo of one. Abhingas are quite beautiful -- look at those blue eyes and long beak. Very well captured and composed! L/V.
