The King Eider (Somateria spectabilis) is the largest sea duck in the Northern Hemisphere, measuring about 22" in length. The King Eider has been known to forage for mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic insects at depths up to 25 meters. These large spectacular sea ducks ae well adapted to Arctic waters. They nest along the high Arctic coast as well as far inland on freshwater lakes. The King Eider in this image is a first winter male. He'll take on a more spectacular appearance once he takes on his breeding plumage.
