Description
The Belted Kingfisher (megaceryle alcyon) is an entertaining bird to watch as it hunts for aquatic prey consisting of fish and crayfish. The bird patiently waits on an exposed perch with a clear view of its feeding area and suddenly dives off the perch when prey is sighted. After hovering for a few seconds above the water, the Kingfisher will then execute a vertical dive into the water to nab its prey which is then taken back to the original perch to be consumed – head first and down the hatch.
The Kingfisher is one of the few birds where the female is more brightly coloured than the male. Photographed at Silver Lake Park in Port Dover Ontario.
