Description
Deadvlei (dead marsh) is located in the Namibian Desert inside the Namib-Naukluft Park. Deadvlei is surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes in the world reaching up to 400 metres. The tallest dune is Big Daddy which overlooks the white clay pan. Over the years, these dunes blocked the flow of the Tsauchab River which at one time produced enough water to allow camel thorn trees to grow. After sand dunes encroached on the pan, the camel thorn trees died from lack of water. The trees present at Deadvlei are believed to have died 600 – 700 years ago. Scorching by the intense sun turned the trees black. Because it is so dry, the trees have not decomposed.
