Description
The Dik-Dik , a small African antelope that inhabits shrublands and savannas of East Africa, stands only 12 to 16 inches (30 - 40 cm.) at the shoulder and are 20 to 28 inches (50 - 70 cm.) long. The male dik-dik has small horns and is slightly smaller than the female. The name dik-dik is from the sound of the alarm that the female makes to warn of danger.
Their bushy habitat provides them with protection from predators as well as a good supply of food consisting of foliage, shoots, and fruit. They derive enough water from their food to make drinking unnecessary.
The biggest threat to the dik-dik is people who hunt them for their skins that provide suede for gloves, and small bones that are used for traditional African jewelry.
