Description
The Caspian Tern (hydroprogne caspia) is the largest of the world’s tern species with a length of 19-24 inches (48-64 cm.) and a wingspan of 50-57 inches (127-145 cm.). Caspians are easily identifiable by their size, their black legs and their long, thick coral bills with a small black tip. Their diet consists mostly of fish. They’re very entertaining to watch as they hover high over the water and then plunge head first to catch their unsuspecting prey. This group was photographed at Burlington Bay (Hamilton Harbour) adjacent to Lake Ontario.
