Description
The dunes at Soussesvlei in the Namib-Nakluft National Park in Namibia are over five million years old. They were created by sand carried by the wind from the Atlantic coast of Namibia. The red colour comes from the iron oxide content in the sand. The beautiful colour of the sand changes throughout the day because of the changing lighting conditions. This image was taken while hiking up Dune 45. Soussesvlei means “dead end marsh” so named because this is the place where the dunes come together and prevent the Tsauchab River from flowing to the Atlantic Ocean.
