Description
The Eastern Meadowlark (sturnella magna), is not actually a member of the lark family, but is a member of the blackbird family. In Ontario, Eastern Meadowlarks are classified as “threatened”. Although they are not endangered, they could become endangered if steps are not taken to protect their habitat which typically includes farm fields, grasslands and wet fields where they build their nests on the ground and use their long sharp bills to probe the ground for insects. The males are typically observed singing from fence posts and tree tops. Photographed along Wylie Road in the Carden Alvar north of Kirkfield, Ontario.
