Description
Common Mergansers (mergus merganser) are fairly large, streamlined ducks that are mostly found along shallow shorelines of rivers and streams. These ducks dive underwater to catch fish, mollusks, crustaceans and amphibians. The serrated edges to their bills help them grasp their prey. The Common Merganser requiress mature forests for their breeding habitat where they nest in hollow trees. This female Common Merganser was photographed in the Burlington Ship Canal which empties into Lake Ontario off Burlington Ontario.
