Description
The Galapagos Tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra) is the largest living species of tortoise weighing up to 417 kg. or 919 lbs. Once thriving on most continents of the world, these tortoises exist only in the Galapagos Archipelago 1000 km. off the west coast of Equador and on the Aldabra Atoll in the indian Ocean 700 km east of Tanzania. It’s not uncommon for these animals to live over 100 years. Spanish explorers in the 16th century named the archipelago Galapagos after galapago meaning tortoise.
