Description
These big heavy-bodied birds are the largest species of gull in the world with a wing span of 62 inches (165 cm). Back in the 1800s these birds were hunted for their feathers which were valued in the clothing industry. It was only after the decline of the feather trade in the early 1900s that Greater Black-backed Gull populations dramatically increased. Greater Black-backed Gulls have a varied diet consisting of fish, invertebrates, small mammals, insects, birds, eggs, carrion and refuse. Large prey is swallowed whole. They aggressively steal food from other gulls and water birds.
