Description
Patiently waiting and watching, this Great Gray Owl, North America's largest owl in terms of height and wingspan searches the snow covered ground for small rodents. Thanks to its large facial disk, the Great Gray has exceptional hearing. It can detect prey at great distances and up to two feet (sixty centimeters) beneath the snow surface. When a potential source of food is located, thanks to its soft fluffy plumage, it slides off its perch, silently glides parallel to the ground and pounces upon its unsuspecting prey. Observing this spectacle, makes the hours of waiting and watching in sub zero temperatures worthwhile.
