Description
The Harlequin Duck (histrionicus histrionicus) is a medium sized diving duck. These birds feed by swimming underwater or diving for mollusks, crustaceans and insects. In North America, there are two populations: one along the Pacific coast and the other in eastern North America along the Atlantic coast. This latter group has been declining over the years and is considered endangered.
This image was photographed at Humber Bay Park along Toronto's Lake Ontario shore. where they are occasionally spotted. since this area is within their irregular migration range.
