Description
The Hummingbird Clearwing Moth (hemaris thybe) is often mistaken for a hummingbird because of the way it hovers and moves in front of flowers similar to the way a hummingbird feeds. Like the larger hummingbird, they can remain suspended in the air while they unfurl their long tongues to sip nectar from flowers. The moth in this image is using its long proboscis to collect nectar from the flower of a viper’s bugloss plant.
