Description
The Impala (Aepyceros melampus) is a graceful, medium sized African antelope that inhabits savannah grasslands and woodlands where they graze and browse for food consisting of grasses, leaves and shrubs. They are extremely agile being able to leap up to 10 feet high with strides of 36 feet long. During the rut, dominant males leave their bachelor herd to establish their own territory confining females and their young within the boundaries of their domain. and defending their harem from other males. The male on the left side of this photograph is keeping a watchful eye out for other males that might be tempted to challenge him and take over the breeding herd.
This breeding herd was photographed in the Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Serengeti is probably the best known wildlife sanctuary in the world .and famous for its huge herds of plains animals. Serengeti derived its name from the Maasai word "serengit" which means "endless plains".
