Artist's Description

Because of its striking appearance, the Mute Swan (Cygnus Olor), a native of Europe and Asia was introduced to North America in the late 1800s. It got its name "mute" because it is less vocal than other swans. The mute swan is easily distinguished from the Tundra Swan and Trumpeter Swan by its orange bill with a black border and by the prominent knob on top of the bill. Originally mute swans were admired in private ponds and city parks, but eventually some escaped and established breeding populations in the wild. Many people today consider them a pest because of their aggressiveness, threatening other native waterfowl.
