Description
The Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) is one of the first ducks to migrate south in the fall and north in the spring. Pintails dabble (tipping their rear end up to feed) on submerged plants, seeds, and invertebrates. These beautiful slim and long-necked water birds are sometimes referred to as “greyhounds of the air”. Once one of the most abundant North American water ducks, the Northern Pintail has declined dramatically since the 1950s because of drought and loss of grassland habitat in the Prairie Pothole region, an area in the midgrass and tallgrass prairies that contains thousands of shallow wetlands called potholes.
