The Great Gray Owl is sometimes known as "The Phantom of the North". These owls are expert "hunting machines". The large parabola-shaped face disk on a Great Gray focuses the sound of small rodents burrowing in tunnels underneath the snow. Their excellent hearing can detect sounds up to 2 feet (60 cm) beneath the snow surface. Upon honing in on the sound of these rodents, a Great Gray Owl slides off its perch, silently glides parallel to the ground and then "snow plunges" to capture its unsuspecting prey. This image has been significantly cropped to show the structure of the Great Gray Owl's face.
