Description
The Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) is a small chunky diving bird with a short, thick bill and virtually no tail. These grebes have the widest distribution of all the North American grebes. Unlike ducks that have webbed feet, grebes have lobes extending out of the sides of their toes giving extra surface area for swimming. Their feet are located well back on their bodies giving rise to the Latin name for grebe meaning “feet on the buttocks”. Other names that have been used for pied-billed grebes include: dabchick, devil-diver, dive-dapper, hell diver and water witch. A group of grebes is known as a “water dance” of grebes.
