Description
The Prothonotary Warbler, also known as the Golden Swamp Warbler in some regions, is listed as an endangered species in Canada. These beautiful birds spend their winters in Central America and Northern South America and migrate north to their breeding sites in much of the Eastern United States and extreme South-western Ontario where they nest in natural or artificial cavities. It is the only eastern North American warbler that builds its nest in cavities usually using old hollows, found in a mature hardwood swamp habitat, excavated by Chickadees and Downy Woodpeckers.
The Prothonotary Warbler was named after prothonotaries, legal clerks in the Roman Catholic Church, who sometimes wear a golden hood and blue cape.
Photographed with a Canon 5D Mark III.
