Description
Probably one of the most common gulls you will see along the coasts and inland waters of North America, these scavengers are often found around parking lots, garbage dumps, beaches and fields, sometimes by the hundreds searching for easy food. In the late nineteenth century, these gulls were hunted for their plumage, but after the decline of the feather trade, Ring-billed gulls flourished resulting in a population explosion today.
Because they are so common and often a nuisance , I often do not pay much attention to them. This one caught my eye because of its location on a rock. After I snapped a couple of pictures, it stretched out one of its legs and balanced on one foot. I'm glad I paid attention.
Photographed at LaSalle Marina in Burlington with a Canon 5D Mark III.

We often call them flying rats, but I must admit this fellow is very handsome. I especially like the red around the eye. His feathers look soft and attractive, and I think you did an excellent job of catching him at his leisure. Great photo.

You captured a lovely pose, Gary. These gulls are indeed common. They seem to be comfortable around humans, frequenting beaches here in California and inland locations including McDonald's parking lots (yes, looking for French fries!). FYI - I also have a Ring-billed Gull photo on FAA. Voted.

Must be a city bird the way he is doing yoga. I bet you cropped out his Starbucks mochachino to the right. Gorgeous colours, composition and clarity. Well done. L
