Description
The Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) is a small to medium North American diving duck. These ducks dive or dabble on the surface of wooded lakes, ponds and rivers for mollusks, invertebrates and submerged vegetation. A faint cinnamon ring around the base of the neck gives these birds their name, however this ring is extremely difficult to see in the field unless at close proximity. They are more easily identified by their peaked head and bold white ring near the tip of their bill. Ring-billed ducks look very similar to Greater and Lesser Scaups.
