Description
The Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is one of ten species of grouse native to North America. It is also the most widely distributed game bird, found in all Canadian provinces and most of the continental states. Smaller than most of the other species of grouse, they are often confused with the grey partridge that prefers open areas rather than woodland habitats of the grouse where they forage on the forest floor for insects and seeds. These birds derive their name from the ruff of thick feathers around their necks which become even more prominent when the males’ feathers expand into a more spectacular ruff as they fan their tail feathers and make a deep airy drumming sound by beating their wings during mating displays. The ruffed grouse is the state bird on Pennsylvania.
