Description
In spring and summer, Scarlett Tanagers can be found in deciduous and mixed deciduous-evergreen forests in Eastern North America. These long distant migrants, winter in South America. Despite the brilliant red coloring of the male, the Scarlett Tanager can be difficult to spot since they tend to frequent the upper forest canopy in search of food. The olive-green and yellow colored females are even more difficult to spot. In the fall, the brilliantly colored males molt to the same olive- green and yellow color as the female, although they do keep their black wings. Scarlett Tanagers are experiencing a decline in numbers because of habitat loss in both their breeding and wintering grounds, climate change and collisions with towers. A group of tanagers is collectively known as a "season of tanagers".
