Description
Despite its name, the Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus), is longer billed that the average shorebird. The Short-billed Dowitcher is very similar to the Long-billed Dowitcher and it’s extremely difficult to distinguish between the two. These shorebirds are commonly found around bogs, marshes mudflats and ponds where they nest on the ground near the water. When feeding they probe with their long bills deep into the mud in a sewing machine fashion for small aquatic invertebrates.
Photographed in the Big Creek wetland at Long Point, near Port Rowan Ontario.
