Description
The silver-backed jackal aka black-backed jackal is one of three jackal species found in Africa. Jackals are medium sized carnivores with dog-like features and a bushy tail. Silver-backed jackals are commonly found in savanna and woodland habitats where they prey on small antelopes like dik-diks, and thompson 's gazelles as well as reptiles insects, and ground dwelling birds. They are a monogamous species, where the male and female occupy the same territory and mate for life. Because of a jackal's reputation of being clever, its nocturnal habits and eerie howl, the ancient Egyptians believed their jackal-headed god, Anubis, guided the dead to those who judged their souls.
