Description
The Barca Ambassador, a three-mast, fully rigged British Tea Clipper sailed between China and England back in the late 1800s. It made its fastest crossing from China to England in 108 days in 1872. Originally built in 1869 of wooden planking over an iron skeleton, all that remains today is her rusted iron hull resting on the beach in Estancia San Gregorio on the north shore of the Straits of Magellan in southern Chile. During her very long career she survived several storms as she sailed to all parts of the world. In 1899, her masts were removed and she was used as a pontoon off Punta Arenas in Chile. She was later beached by her owners, where she remains today. The site was declared a historical monument in 1973.
