Description
The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, (tokus leucomelas ), was made famous by the Disney movie The Lion King where it appears as one of the characters named Zazu. The Yellow-billed Hornbill is also referred to as a “flying banana” from its large, prominent curved yellow bill. They can be found in all areas of southern Africa’s scrub and acacia woodlands. These birds are a very sociable species often living in small groups. The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill often forms a symbiotic relationship with dwarf mongoose eating items that the mongoose digs up from the ground. In return, the hornbill will warn mongoose of raptors hunting overhead.
