Description
The yellow-billed cuckoo is the most widespread member of the cuckoo family. Deciduous woodlands make up their preferred habitat. They are fairly common in eastern North America, but have suffered a sharp decline in the West where they are now rare. Their favorite food consists of caterpillars. An individual bird can eat thousands of caterpillars in a single season. Often when a storm approaches, Yellow-billed Cuckoos utter a distinctive call, earning the name of "Rain Crow" or "Storm Crow". A group of cuckoos is collectively known as a "cooch" or "asylum" of cuckoos.
