Artist's Description

The American Kestrel, (Falvo sparverius) sometimes known as a sparrow hawk, is the smallest and most colourful of the North American Falcons. About the size of an American Robin, kestrels are often seen perching on telephone wires along roadsides or at the very top of a tree. They are easily recognized by their shape, colour and pumping motion of their tails as if trying to maintain balance. When hunting, they hover high in the air with rapid wing beats, before swooping down on their prey which typically consists of mice, small birds, and insects. These small falcons can also find themselves being preyed upon by larger falcons, hawks, owls and even crows. This American Falcon was photographed at Windermere Basin adjacent to Lake Ontario at Burlington, Ontario, Canada.
