Artist's Description

Eastern Chipmunks (Tamias striatus) are small striped rodents related to squirrels. Their omnivorous diet consists largely of seeds, nuts and buds. The stretchy skin of a chipmunk’s cheek pouch permits it to stuff large quantities of food that it hides in the forest or carries off to its burrow. Since chipmunks don’t accumulate enough fat during the fall, they rely on this cached food to make it through the winter. Chipmunks are not true hibernators, but do go into a deep sleep with lower body temperatures (referred to as torpor), occasionally interrupted by periods of feeding. A group of chipmunks is called a scurry.
