The Impala, a medium sized African antelope, inhabits savannah grasslands and woodlands close to water sources. They have a variable diet which enables them to switch from grazing (on grasses) in the wet season to browsing (on small plants and bushes) during the dry season. Because of this adaptation, they don't need to migrate long distances like many other antelopes.
They're highly social in their nature and congregate in single-sex herds. During the mating season, however, they form large herds made up of many females and a single, dominant breeding male who has to keep a watchful eye out for competitors that want to take over the harem.
Because the Impala is an open grassland species, it has nowhere to hide from predators. These animals adapt to their environment via their speed, agility and endurance.
The calf remains with its mother for four to six months, after which it joins juvenile groups.
