Artist's Description

East Africa's great migration is one of the greatest spectacles on earth. The migration takes place in the Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem in Kenya and Tanzania. Over a million plains animals, mostly wildebeest (white-bearded gnu), complete the circular migration route of somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles (800 to 1600 Km.) each year. January to March usually finds them in Tanzania's southern Serengeti where the calving season takes place. About 80% of Wildebeest births occur within a two to three week span. The sheer number of births in a short time span ensures survival of the species. Although many newborns will succumb to predation, a large percentage will survive.
This is an extremely vulnerable time for mother and baby, because the births tend to happen on the open plains where predators lie in wait for an easy meal. Other animals in the herd surround the scene and keep an eye out for danger.

I'm a retired teacher living in Southern Ontario, Canada. I worked 35 years full time and 10 years part time as a classroom teacher and guidance counselor with the Peel District School Board. I also worked part time in the Faculties of Education of York University and the University of Toronto in their Additional Qualifications Programs. I purchased my first SLR camera back in the 60's and instantly fell in love with photography. My love of the outdoors led to my keen interest in hiking and nature/wildlife photography. My hiking and photography excursions have taken me on trips to East Africa, the Canadian and American Rockies, Patagonia (Argentina and Chile), Ecuador and the Galapagos Archipelago, Costa Rica and Florida and will...
