The crystal blue ice face of the Perito Morino Glacier located in the Patagonian region of Argentina is a truly spectacular site. The glacier was named in honor of Francisco Moreno an early explorer. Francisco Moreno was also referred to as Perito Moreno, perito meaning specialist or expert. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field occupies 250 square km. and is about 30 k. (18 miles) in length and represents the world's third largest reserve of fresh water. Its front is about 5 km in width. The glacier walls tower an average of 74 m (240) ft) above the surface of Lake Argentino, but has a total depth of 170 m (558 ft). Although large chunks of ice continually calve from the front of the glacier, the Perito Morino is actually one of the world's few advancing glaciers, continually growing, expanding outward and occupying more territory.
