The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) is a medium sized, migratory woodpecker that drills rows of shallow holes which act as sap wells allowing the bird to lap up sugary sap as well as insects that get caught up in the wells. This young sapsucker hasn't yet developed the characteristic red patches on the head or throat.
