Artist's Description
Cataract Falls also known as Churches Falls is located in Ontario’s Forks of the Credit Provincial Park. The park is in the Town of Caledon, part of the Region of Peel. At Cataract, the Credit River plummets 21 meters over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. Early in the 19th Century, prospectors were drawn to the area with the hope of finding gold. No gold was found, but salt was discovered and for a few years, was mined in the area. The true value of the falls proved to be in its potential for water power. Early on a sawmill was constructed at the falls providing lumber for the earlier settlers. Later the falls were used to harness power for a grist mill. In the late 19th Century, a power plant was constructed at the lip of the falls. The hydro- electric plant at Cataract was one of Canada’s earliest power generating plants. The ruins of the former Cataract Powerhouse and Dam are still visible at the top of the falls.
