The Cedar Waxwing ( bombycilla cedrorum) with its crested head, black throat and mask and sleek waxy wing tips is a striking looking bird. The splashes of red on the wing feathers and yellow on the tip of its tail further enhance its appearance. These social birds are often found in flocks at the edge of wooded areas feeding on berries and fruit and occasionally, after eating quantities of fermented fruit, can be observed on the ground like “drunken sailors” unable to fly. Fortunately, they soon recover.
Photographed at Silver Lake Lions Park in Port Dover, Ontario.
