Artist's Description
Fritillary butterflies are often mistaken for Monarch butterflies because of the colour similarity, but upon close observation, the pattern on the wings is very different. The name "fritillary" comes from the Latin word "fritillus" meaning chessboard. Like Monarchs, Fritillaries are selective eaters, but unlike Monarchs, they prefer violets instead of milkweed. Without violets, the fritillaries would not survive. There are several species of fritillary butterflies (14 species of greater fritillaries and 16 species of lesser fritillaries) The fritillary pictured here is one of the greater fritillaries - either a Great Spangled Fritillary of a Aphrodite Fritillary. They're very difficult to tell apart.
