Artist's Description

Ostriches are large flightless birds weighing in at 140 to 320 lbs (69 to 145 kilograms). Despite their size, these birds can run at speeds up to 43 mph (70 km. per hour), covering 10-16 feet (3 to 5 meters) in a single stride, the fastest land speed of any bird. They are able to sustain a steady speed of 30mph (50 km/h) for long periods of time allowing them to outrun and outlast most predators. If cornered, they resort to their powerful kick which can severely injure or kill any pursuer.
The Somali Ostrich, found in the semi-arid region of Ethiopia, northeastern Kenya and Somalia, is a different sub-species than the Masai Ostrich typically found in the savannah habitat in southern Kenya and eastern Tanzania. In the Somali Ostrich, the thighs and neck are a grey-blue in color. The Masai sub-species sports a bright pink neck and thighs.
