The elusive Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis) at 30 cm. (12”) in height is one of the smallest herons in the world. These birds have adapted to life in the marsh where they spend much time straddling cattails and reeds as they search for food. In Ontario, Least Bitterns are classified as “threatened” meaning that they live in the wild in Ontario, are not endangered, but are likely to become endangered if steps are not taken to address factors threatening them. The main threat to the Least bittern is destruction of its wetland habitat. A group of bitterns has many collective nouns, including a "dash", "freeze", "pint", "pretense" and "siege" of bitterns.
